Fraternal Value of the Week – The Creed of Sigma Pi

Sigma Pi

Our next Fraternal Value of the Week comes from the Sigma Pi Fraternity. Their creed, like many of the oldest fraternities, is in a style that fits the time it was written. The Sigma Pi Creed reads:

I believe in Sigma Pi, a Fellowship of kindred minds, united in Brotherhood to advance Truth and Justice, to promote Scholarship, to encourage Chivalry, to diffuse Culture, and to develop Character, in the Service of God and Man; and I will strive to make real the Fraternity’s ideals in my own daily life.

Sigma Pi chose to explain their creed to better explain how their brothers could live up to it today. It is in the explanation of their belief “to encourage Chivalry” that Sigma Pi outlines clearly why they promote a culture of consent.

The Sigma Pi Creed states that its brothers “are bound to treat each woman with the respect, dignity and honor that we would bestow on our own mother, sister.” Brothers, by being upheld to this standard, can promote a culture of respect on their campus in which they do not tolerate harassment or sexual assault.

Sigma Pi recognizes the need to challenge sexist language to end sexual violence on campus. They go further in their explanation:

As members of Sigma Pi Fraternity, we will not condone, nor promote printed items (such as t-shirts, posters, banners, websites) which promote the degradation of womankind in any manner. Obscene and sexually explicit material will not be published by anyone, especially within our organization which contains our name or our logos (protected by copy write) which would cause dishonor for the Fraternity or any of its members.

Sigma Pi challenges it’s members to become allies not only in preventing sexual violence but also preventing sexism on campus and within the Greek system.

As they close this section, the Sigma Pi Creed says “Demeaning even one woman, let alone many, is absolutely asinine for a man.” To be a true brother of Sigma Pi, a fraternity member must not contribute to the culture that encourages sexual assault, but rather be part of the solution.

Sigma Pi has shown with the explanation of its creed that it believes consent is part of what it means to be in a fraternity. We’re excited to join with these brothers to help end sexual assault on college campuses.
