Fraternal Value of the Week – The Creed of Pi Lambda Phi

This week’s fraternal value comes from the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity, who’s official philanthropy is The Elimination of Prejudice, which “works to set the conditions for sensitive societal conversations to take place, and promotes the principles of equality and inclusiveness to the widest possible audience”(1). The goal of the fraternity’s official philanthropy aligns with the mission of Consent is So Frat, to bring the conversation around consent and sexual assault into fraternities and sororities in order to make promoting consent and preventing sexual violence part of what it means to be Greek. In addition to their national philanthropy, Pi Lambda Phi’s creed holds similar commitment to this work. The Creed of Pi Lambda Phi is:

That all men are created free and equal.

That no society of men can flourish unless members of that society are endowed with the opportunities and privileges of freedom.

That freedom implies the elimination of prejudice. That the elimination of prejudice means a better understanding ‘twixt men.

That it is incumbent upon me to fight for such freedom, even with my life.

That it is incumbent upon me, in my personal life, to be devoted to the highest standards of honesty and justice.

That because my country is dedicated to the highest standards of freedom and justice for all men of all creeds, I hereby pledge allegiance to my country, and to its national symbol.

First, “that all men are created free and equal” compels a respect for all persons, to not hold power over others. Sexual assault, as an act of power and not of sex, is to deny someone this freedom.

For all to be “endowed with the opportunities and privileges of freedom”, a brother of Pi Lambda Phi must work to prevent sexual assault on campus so that all students on campus do not have this freedom. It also asks for brothers to be supportive of survivors so that they may reclaim this freedom. Promoting consent, whether through events held by the fraternity or through their education, is to work to create this culture that their creed holds them to.”

“That freedom implies the elimination of prejudice” is a call to action, from the national Pi Lambda Phi to each of its brothers. For brothers to live the creed and value this freedom, they must work to prevent all things which deny people this freedom, including sexual violence. A brother of Pi Lambda Phi creates a culture within his chapter which eliminates prejudice of violence against women – installing safe party guidelines, educating the chapter, and challenging the words and actions of its brothers. Even though these actions may at time by difficult, they are necessary for a brother to work to achieve the goal of their creed. In addition, “a better understanding ‘twixt men” calls on the brothers to educate themselves. Brothers of Pi Lambda Phi should get educated about consent and how to prevent sexual assault.

The call to action is furthered by the creed’s statement that it “is incumbent upon me to fight for such freedom.” Brothers of Pi Lambda Phi should, to live their values, fight against sexual violence that takes away the freedom of individuals on their campus.

It is not enough just to act, but to personally commit to living in a way that values consent, in order “to be devoted to the highest standards of honesty and justice”. A brother of Pi Lambda Phi knows how to value consent in his personal relationships, as well as how not to diminish it in conversation or action.

Lastly, as our country takes action against sexual assault on college campuses through the Its On Us Campaign, it’s on the brothers of Pi Lambda Phi to support these efforts. For our country to be “dedicated to the highest standards of freedom and justice for all men of all creeds” it is taking action to protect freedoms by preventing sexual assault. A brother of Pi Lambda Phi stands by the work of the country to do so.

The Creed of Pi Lambda Phi stands as a call to action and reflection for all its brothers, asking them to become brothers who make promoting consent and preventing sexual assault part of what it means to be in Pi Lambda Phi. We have and will continue to support the efforts of chapters of Pi Lambda Phi as well as of the national organization to take action to make their campuses safer. To prevent sexual violence is to work towards the elimination of prejudice.
